(Cindy) Cheng I-Hsin (1991-)

 

Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and grew up in Penang, Malaysia, (Cindy) Cheng I-Hsin graduated from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at National Taiwan University, where she also completed the Art and Design Programme, she is currently pursuing her fine art master degree in Taipei National University of the Arts. Her long-term art project ‘Living Andy Warhol’ depicting Andy Warhol’s original series of Campbell’s Soup Can paintings was invited to numerous exhibitions. The artist’s much anticipated solo exhibition ‘Project Living Andy Warhol 2011-2015’ was announced in March 2015 and was invited by Showartz Gallery for a collaborating exhibition ‘Living Andy Warhol—The Art of Repetition through Time’ in the summer of 2015. The series was invited to exhibit in ‘2012 Spring Open Studio’ at Taipei Artist Village and Treasure Hill Artist Village and a part of the ‘Art Practice and Presentation’ group exhibition at the Association of the Visual Arts in Taiwan in 2012.

 

The project began during the artist’s study of Andy Warhol, whose works, philosophy and related critiques deeply inspired her and became the fundamental influence in her creative journey. As opposed to Warhol’s original silkscreen-printed Campbell’s Soup Cans, (Cindy) Cheng I-Hsin’s most well-known replicas examine the emotional value in mundane commodity today, emphasising the importance of the taken-for-granted daily objects. With ink on paper to create the almost identical images, her subtle hand-drawn technique accentuates the idea of human being as or as opposed to the machine. Going into its fifth year, project ‘Living Andy Warhol’ ultimately illustrates the familiar portraits of popular culture and mass media. The material and subject chosen from the artist life turn the paintings into a reflection and the product of the present time and culture. Through the spontaneous brushstrokes by the ink pens, the artist re-lives the process of repetition and represents the iconic images through time.
